Only recent progress in instrumentation has opened up the window to study the star formation process in the context of its galactic environment. ALMA, VLT/MUSE, and HST now provide observations on the scales of molecular clouds, HII regions, and young stellar clusters across the star-forming disks in significant samples of nearby galaxies. Such a comprehensive dataset for about 20-90 galaxies is currently being assembled by the PHANGS (Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS) collaboration. I will provide an overview of the surveys and highlight a number of recent results from the project.
