A novel technique for the study of the observed and simulated molecular cloud formation

We introduce the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), a tool developed for machine vision that we propose as a new metric for the systematic characterization of molecular cloud formation models and their evaluation in spectral-line observations of atomic and molecular gas. I will show the results of the HOG analysis of real and synthetic HI and 13CO (J=1 → 0) observations and discuss the prospects of this technique for the systematic study of large volumes of real and simulated data.
