2024 NEON Observing School

National Observatory of Athens

13 - 25 October 2024

The 2024 NEON Observing school will take place in Greece at the facilities of the National Observatory of Athens 13 - 25 October 2024. During the school we will use in person the 2.3 metre Aristarchos telescope and 1.2 metre Kryoneri telescope. In addition we will obtain data also from the 2 metre Liverpool Telescope. Liverpool Telescope is a robotic telescope located on La Palma in Spain.

During this two week school you will plan observation, carry-out hands-on observations with professional 1-2 metre telescopes, prepare robotic observations, and reduce and analyse data. All this will be done with a help of an experienced tutor. The school also includes lectures on topics related to telescopes and observing techniques.

The school is primarily meant for PhD students in Astronomy, who do not have prior experience in observing with professional telescopes. MSc students in the late stages of their thesis work, and young PostDocs who do not have observing experience, can also be considered.

ORP will pay the accommodation in shared rooms and most of the meals. The paid meals include breakfast and lunches during the whole school. On observing days the dinner will also be provided. Other days one can find afordable dinner options close to the accommodation.

If you are interested in hands-on observing experience, and learning all the steps from planning the observations to reducing the data, this school is perfect for you.
