The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and
Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg (IMPRS-HD)
has been established in 2005 as a graduate school for PhD studies.
In addition to the yearly course program for graduate studies in astronomy
and astrophysics, IMPRS-HD is organizing an
annual summer school on up-to-date scientific topics.
Internationally renowned scientists are invited as lecturers.
Graduate students and early postdocs are particularly welcome to
participate.

The 2023 Heidelberg Summer School will focus on the most relevant aspects of galaxy evolution addressed by JWST,
from nearby to the most distant galaxies.
JWST revealed surprises from its first images and is already revolutionizing many fields of astrophysics.
The school will give the participants an overview of what we have learned about galaxy evolution in the first
year of JWST observations, the emerging challenges, and the opportunity to work with JWST data guided by
world-renowned experts.
The topics include an overview of JWST, the physics of nearby galaxies, the role of AGN feedback, the cosmic
noon, and the high-z Universe. The lectures will be accompanied by hands-on sessions and talks highlighting
recent scientific results.
|
|
|
The school has four main components spread throughout the week
1. A series of structured lectures given by the five lecturers.
2. Problem-solving sessions based on the topics given in the lectures.
3. Presentations by local experts to open scientific problems.
4. A social program to enable and encourage scientific interaction between students, lecturers and speakers.
Here is a link to the School program (as of Aug 28).

The IMPRS Summer School will start on Monday morning (September 4) and end on
Friday afternoon (September 8).
PLANE arrivals:
Frankfurt/Main (FRA): The easiest is to take the (direct) airport bus to
Heidelberg which runs about every hour.
The bus is labeled "Lufthansa bus" but might be run by a different company.
The bus leaves very close to the exit gate B at Frankfurt airport.
This link
provides further information for reservations. Note that a reservation
(3 days in advance) is highly recommended as the "bus" is actually a van with 9 seats only.
The bus arrives very close to downtown Heidelberg, Bahnhofstr.3-5., about 200 m away from
the central bus station "Bismarck-Platz".
There are also frequent train connections from the airport via
Mannheim to Heidelberg (main station).
Departure for high speed trains (ICE) is "Frankfurt-Flughafen Fernbahnhof" with
direction Munich, Basel or Stuttgart. You have to change trains in Mannheim
for a local train to Heidelberg.
You may buy train tickets in Frankfurt at the counter of at a ticket machine.
TRAIN arrivals:
Trains will arrive at Heidelberg main station ("Hauptbahnhof"), about
500 m away from either downtown Heidelberg or the Mathematikon.
If you want to go downtown, you may take the tram (line 5) direction
downtown Heidelberg (direction "Bismarckplatz" which is the central
bus stop), or bus 32, or 31.
Hotel IBIS
is located just besides the main station. If you arrive by the
Lufthansa bus, take a tram or a bus to the main station. The trams leave 100m
from the Lufthansa bus stop.
Steffis Hostel
is located 100m north of main station.
Enter the big shopping mall (outdoor equipment) north of the train station.
Pass it to the north, leave it and go 150m to a big brick stone building (old factory).
The hostel is located in there.
To go to the Mathematikon conference center,
take the tram 5 or from the main station direction "Handschuhsheim" to stop "Bunsengymnasium",
or bus 31 from the main station direction "Universitaetsplatz" to stop "Bunsengymnasium,
or bus 31 from the main bus stop at "Bismarckplatz" direction "Hauptbahnhof" and continue to stop "Bunsengymnasium".
