The International Max Planck Research School for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg (IMPRS-HD) has been established in 2005 as a graduate school for PhD studies.

In addition to the yearly course program for graduate studies in astronomy and astrophysics, IMPRS-HD is organizing an annual summer school on up-to-date scientific topics. Internationally renowned scientists are invited as lecturers.

Graduate students and early postdocs are particularly welcome to participate.

When & where:
The 16th Heidelberg Summer School took place September 13-17, 2021, as ONLINE school.

Scope of the School:

The 2021 Heidelberg Summer School did focus on the most relevant aspects of stellar astrophysics, insofar they are relevant for the interaction of stars with each other, and with their planetary systems.

Five distinguished invited lecturers, along with an assortment of local experts, did provide an introduction to the field. In addition to the formal lectures, there were be hands-on sessions to perform simulations on stellar evolution, and to explore Gaia data. We did provide career discussions, and a variety of social activities.

Topics that are covered include: Stellar evolution, binary stars and evolutionary paths leading to sources of gravitational waves, stellar activity and interaction with planetary atmospheres, asteroseismology, mass loss and stellar winds.

School format:

The school has four main components spread throughout the week

1. A series of structured lectures given by the five lecturers.
2. Problem-solving sessions based on the topics given in the lectures.
3. Presentations by local experts to open specific scientific problems.
4. A social program (Covid limited) to enable and encourage scientific interaction between students, lecturers and speakers.
