From Cloud to Star Formation: the case of W43

W43 is a mini-starburst region in our Galaxy, located at the junction of the Bar with spiral arms. It appears therefore a very good candidate to investigate the theories of molecular cloud formation through colliding flows, all the way through the stages of massive star formation. We have successfully applied for a large program at the IRAM 30m telescope, and large scale observations of 13CO(2-1), C18O(2-1) and smaller scale observations of HCO+(3-2) have commenced in Winter 2009/2010. In this contribution I will present the first results of these observations, and discuss how they can be compared to hydrodynamic or magnetohydrodynamic simulations of colliding clouds.
