Massive Star Formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Spitzer observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), complemented by higher-resolution near-IR and optical images, have been used to identify young stellar objects (YSOs) across the entire LMC. The inventory of massive YSOs (> 10 Msun) in the LMC is quite complete and accurate, as checked by a thorough completeness analysis, compared with maser sources, and confirmed by Spitzer IRS spectra. This complete inventory of massive YSOs can be compared with the molecular and stellar environment to study where and how massive stars are formed. Spitzer IRS spectra of these massive YSOs further allow us to see the chemical evolution of massive YSOs.
Caption: MCELS Halpha+continuum image of the LMC overlaid with positions of candidate YSOs. Sources shown with red symbols have [8.0] < 8.0 mag, roughly indicating more massive YSO candidates while the remaining YSO candidates are shown with yellow symbols. Solid circles mark the locations of source classified as "Definite YSOs," open circles mark "Probable YSOs," and crosses mark "Possible YSOs." The NANTEN CO contours are plotted in blue.
