Directionality in Star Clusters

Annabel Cartwright

Statistical tools used for the characterisation of Star Clusters generally discard any information about direction between neighbouring stars. Here we introduce a technique from GeoPhysics, the Fry Plot, which captures and displays anisotropy in the distribution of neighbours, clearly identifying directionality in the probability density function for separation between stars. We demonstrate the resulting plots for real star clusters, noting measurable anisotropy in Taurus and IC2391. The existence of directional bias within star clusters may provide evidence for externally triggered star formation.
