Star cluster formation, backwards: how far back in time can we trace the formation of star clusters?

Markus Kissler-Pattig

I intend to review briefly the properties of star clusters in galaxies today, with emphasis on differences with the stellar populations. Then work backwards in time through the young stages of star cluster (their properties, their mass function and their tendency to cluster in complexes) with a brief excursion in the properties of the related super-giant molecular clouds. I will end with the stages of embedded massive star cluster as far back as observations allow to trace them today. The aim is to explore the links between the early phases of star cluster and of star formation.
