Almost complete freeze-out in a pre-stellar core

ALMA observations of a pre-stellar core, coupled with comprehensive chemical models and non-LTE radiative transfer code, show clear evidence of the freeze-out of NH2D, so far considered the species best tracing core centres. The central 2000 au of pre-stellar cores similar to L1544 are expected to have 99.99% of all species heavier than He within dust icy mantles. This allows storage of pre-stellar chemical species for later phases of star- and planet-formation.
