ALMA provides unprecedented opportunities to study the early phases
of star formation. The combination of sensitivity, angular resolution,
and spectral flexibility enable detailed studies of star forming regions
on the scale of dense cores to individual protostars. These observations
will play a critical role in testing and refining the current star formation
paradigm. I will provide an overview of ALMA's current capabilities and how
ALMA can be used to probe the physical conditions in low- and high-mass
star formation regions. I will also summarize ongoing and future
developments for ALMA.
