JWST Extinction Mapping of IR Dark Clouds

Erick Young
USRA, Mountain View, California, US
We describe a JWST Guaranteed Time program to obtain deep NIRCam images of a small sample of infrared dark clouds to investigate the structure of filaments in these clouds. Observations at 1.15, 2.00, 3.56, and 4.44 μm will be obtained to map out the background stellar population at unprecedented sensitivity and angular resolution. The expected background star densities will produce extinction maps that will allow characterization of the structure of these filaments at ~3 arc-second angular resolution to extinctions in excess of Av 50. Three regions with extensive ancillary data will be observed: G11.11-0.12 (The Snake), G0.253+0.016 (The Brick), and IRDC 18223.
Caption: Spitzer 4.5, 8, and 24 μm image of infrared dark cloud G11.11-0.12 (The Snake) with a 4 x 2 arcminute observations box to be mapped with JWST NIRCam.
