The role of filaments in star formation

Far-Infrared and submillimeter surveys have revealed a complex network of filaments permeating star forming molecular clouds. The observed persistence of these structures suggest that they are a significant and long-lived component of a molecular cloud and may provide important insight to the process of star formation. We present a study of the filamentary structure of the DR21 and W51 high-mass star forming regions, using data obtained at 850 microns with the SCUBA-2 on the JCMT. We identify the distribution of clumps/cores from filaments in these regions and investigate the relation between them, comparing the mass functions for clumps/cores that have formed both near and far from filaments. | |
