Cores and Collapse : Observations of Cores & Collapse

Yancy Shirley
The University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona
I shall review the fundamental observed properties (size, mass, etc.) of low-mass (M < few solar masses) and high-mass cores (M > few solar masses), highlighting recent modifications to the evolutionary schemes for both low-mass and high-mass star formation during the deeply embedded phasses. Our understanding of their (magneto)-hydrodynamical evolution remains an outstanding observational and theoretical problem. I shall also summarize the observational kinematic evidence for large scale collapse in star-forming cores and the ability of the current and next generation of observations to constrain the theoretical models.
