It's not that massive stars are found in clusters, it's clusters that are found around massive stars

An important fraction of stars in the Universe are formed in massive clusters. Still, we do not know how massive star clusters form, nor why do they form at all. In this contribution I will present our latest results from observations of massive cluster NGC 3603 with a new technique at the core of the future Extremely Large Telescopes (MCAO), recently demonstrated at the VLT. We will address issues of mass segregation (or lack there of), the IMF of the cluster, and its evolutionary status. We will end suggesting a new scenario for the formation of massive clusters. In this new scenario, massive stars form first and play a critical role on the formation of massive clusters. Evidence from the literature for and against this scenario will be discussed.
