ALMA - status, capabilities, future possible developments, and outlook on (early phase) star formation research with this facility

Leonardo Testi
ESO, Garching, Germany
ALMA is going to be the world leading observatory at millimeter wavelengths in the coming decades, the project is now in its main construction phase with early science activities envisaged for 2010 and full science operations for late 2012. In this talk I will review the concept, science goals and construction status of ALMA. I will also briefly review the status of the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment on Chajnantor, a telescope that is heavily used as a survey telescope for ALMA. Special attention will be given to the relevance of this project for the study of the early phases of star formation.
