Magnetic Fields: Recent Progress and Future Tests

Shantanu Basu
Department of Physics and Astronomy University of Western Ontario, London, Canada
This review talk focuses on physical processes associated with magnetic fields. The emphasis is on theory but connections are made with current and possible future observational tests of various scenarios. Some key questions I address are as follows. Are molecular clouds subcritical, transcritical, or supercritical on large scales? How does it matter? Does turbulence dominate magnetic effects? Is the core mass function related to the magnetic field? How coupled is the magnetic field to the overwhelmingly neutral gas at various densities? How is ambipolar diffusion enhanced or revitalized by turbulence and protostellar formation, respectively? How do disks form, avoiding a catastrophic loss of angular momentum by magnetic braking?
