In star formation regions, radiative transfer modeling is particularly difficult as the forming stars are often deeply embedded in complex dust structures. The main challenge in performing 3D RT modeling and the currently used methods will be critically discussed. Four examples of recent image modeling will be presented illustrating the capability of 3D radiative transfer to answer fundamental open questions of the star formation process:
1. An analysis of the most-extended circumstellar disk known so far including a stability analysis of extended disk structures.
2. Modeling of the first candidate for a remnant disk around a massive star.
3. The first 3D modeling of a pre-stellar core (Rho Oph D).
4. Inverse 3D radiative transfer analysis of the famous Bok globule B68.
