When & where:
The 4th Heidelberg Summer School took take place August 10-14, 2009 at the "Max-Planck Haus" (Max Planck building) in Heidelberg, Germany

Scope of the School:

The goals of the IMPRS Summer schools are:
(1) to bring together research students of various fields for discussion and exchange of ideas;
(2) to encourage young researchers and advanced students to continue research in these fields; and
(3) to strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas;

The topic of this school, Statistical Inferences from Astrophysical Data, is of essential interest for almost all astronomical and astrophysical projects. Examples are huge dates sets from large-scale surveys, similar imformation from corresponding numerical simulations, the limit of sparse data coverage in time or space, incomplete data, the searching for periodicities in (unevenly) sampled data ...

Topics covered by the main lecturers include

  • Approaches to hypothesis testing, parameter testing
  • Modeling, testing, estimating in astrophysics
  • The time domain, multi-epoch data, red noise

Further topics were Monte Carlo approaches, maximum likelyhood techniques, parametric tests, biases in censored/incomplete data, or Bayesian statistics applications.
