This webpage provides information for the 3rd Heidelberg Summer School 2008 organized by the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg.

Organization:

IMPRS for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg,
Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics
Center for Astronomy - University of Heidelberg

Lecturers:

Torsten Böker, European Space Agency
Roberto Gilmozzi, European Southern Observatory
Albrecht Poglitsch , Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics
Andreas Quirrenbach, Center for Astronomy, Heidelberg University
Wolfgang Wild, SRON, Netherlands Institute for Space Research

When & where:

The 3rd Heidelberg Summer School took place September 1-5, 2008 at the "Max Planck Haus" (Max Planck House) in Heidelberg, Germany.

Scope of the School:

The goals of the IMPRS Summer Schools are to:
- present an overview of the progress in major areas during the past years;
- bring together research students of various fields for discussion and exchange of ideas;
- encourage young researchers and advanced students to continue research in these fields; and
- strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas;

The choice of Astronomical Instrumentation as topic for the IMPRS Summer School 2008 is motivated by the recent rapid evolution in this field and the expected progress in the future. Instrumentation planned or constructed today will be used by our young colleagues tomorrow. We concentrate on the optical to infrared regime since this is the window where there is most of the local expertise.

Topics covered by the main lecturers include

  • Interferometry
  • Adaptive optics
  • Herschel SPIRE / PACS / HIFI
  • ELT
  • JWST

Further topics were be the H.E.S.S. telescope, the GAIA and CoRoT satellites, the LBT, and survey instrumentation.
