The goals of the IMPRS Summer Schools are:
The choice of having the Milky Way Galaxy as topic for the IMPRS Summer School 2007
is motivated by the fact of both the recent rapid progress in and the bright future of the field
provided by observational, instrumental and theoretical advances.
Several major Milky Way surveys
are currently ongoing or were recently finished,
and the ESA cornerstone mission Gaia is bound to
revolutionize the field of Galactic astronomy.
The Milky Way is also a topic which is of interest for a broad audience of students and young scientists.
Further, results from Milky Way science also have a major impact on our understanding of galactic
evolution and cosmology.
Topics to be covered by the lectures will include
