This webpage provides information for the 1st Heidelberg Summer School 2006 hosted by the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg.

Organization:

IMPRS for Astronomy and Cosmic Physics at the University of Heidelberg,
Max Planck Institute for Astronomy,
University of Heidelberg

Lecturers:
Leo Blitz, University of California, Berkeley
Thomas Henning, Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg
Robert Williams, Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore

When & where:
The 1st Heidelberg Summer School took take place September 25-29, 2006 at the "Max-Planck Haus" (Max Planck building) in Heidelberg, Germany

Scope of the School:

The goals of the IMPRS Summer school are:
(1) to present an overview of the progress in major areas during the past years;
(2) to bring together research students of various fields for discussion and exchange of ideas;
(3) to encourage young researchers and advanced students to continue research in these fields; and
(4) to strengthen future interdisciplinary research in these areas;

Our choice of having the Interstellar Medium as topic for the IMPRS Summer School 2006 is motivated by the fact of both the rapid progress in and the bright future of the field provided by observational, instrumental and theoretical advances.

The Interstellar Medium is as well a topic which is potentially interesting for a broad audience of students and young scientists, as it is a major constituent in a variety of galactic and extragalactic environments.

Topics to be covered by the lectures will include

  • The Multi-phase model of the interstellar medium
  • The analytic tracers
  • Radio astronomy
  • The atomic gas
  • Molecular clouds
  • The ionized gas
  • Cosmic dust
  • The interstellar medium in other galaxies
  • Key results from HST - stars and resolved stellar systems
  • Key results from HST - the distant universe
