Exploring Class 0 protostars on au scales

Hannah Calcutt

Understanding the early stages of star formation is an observational challenge, owing to physically complex sources, deeply embedded in their natal environments. This is acutely problematic for the Class 0 stage of low-mass star formation, with a combination of physical structures, such as envelopes, discs, filaments, and outflows presenting a dynamically complex environment. Observations of both continuum and molecular emission at high angular resolution, however, can disentangle these complex sources. In this talk, I will present the highest angular resolution ALMA observations to date, of two Class 0 systems, B335 and IRAS 16293-2422, probing scales of only a few au. These observations combine both continuum and molecular emission, to achieve an unparalleled insight into the small-scale structures around forming protostars, allowing us to constrain the launching mechanism and the properties of outflows and probe the disc properties. Additionally, these observations, combined with MHD simulations herald the possibly of a new tracer of evolutionary stage in Class 0 objects.
