Tracing Magnetic Fields with Velocity Gradients

Alex Lazarian
UW-Madison, Madison, US
A radically new technique of tracing magnetic fields in diffuse ISM and molecular clouds is demonstrated using both synthetic data and observations. For observations the results are compared with far infrared polarimetry. The technique is capable of studying 3D distribution of magnetic field in the galactic disk and within molecular clouds. It also identifies regions of gravitational collapse. A survey of magnetic fields obtained with the new technique in diffuse regions and molecular clouds is presented. On the basis of the technique new ways of measuring magnetic fields intensities are discussed. The new technique opens new ways of exploring the effects of magnetic fields on star formation.
