Dense cores: from their internal structure to their connection with the surrounding cloud

Mario Tafalla
OAN, Madrid, ES
Dense cores are the simplest star-forming sites and their study provides much needed observational constraints on the early phases of star formation. As observational techniques have improved, interest on cores has shifted from their global properties, to their internal structure, and recently, to their connection with the (filamentary) cloud environment. I this talk, I will review our current knowledge of the physical properties of cores from an observer's point of view, trying to emphasize those aspects of most interest for the meeting.
