The Earliest Stages of Massive Stars - The Search Continues

Thomas Henning
Max-Planck-Institut fuer Astronomie, Heidelberg, Germany
I will shortly summarize our present knowledge on the earliest stages of massive stars and will ask the question how much evidence we actually have for the existence of massive pre-stellar cores. The presentation will use an object with an extremely good multi-wavelength coverage as a guide through the landscape of massive star formation. I will discuss the observational challenges and will confront derived physical parameters with theoretical models. The talk will conclude with a discussion of Herschel key projects devoted to a better understanding of these phases.
