PSF Retreat 2014 - Scientific Program

Here you can find the detailed scientific program: PSF Retreat 2014 Program (PDF). Note that we will bring hardcopies to Schöntal, so it is not necessary to print this yourself.

Social Program

Instead of trying to accommodate a talk for every participant, we have chosen a format with a relatively relaxed program of talks, with long coffee breaks and a lot of time to interact in between sessions. In addition, lots of time to talk informally is available on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. As we are staying in a beautiful and historic place, we can use the opportunity to explore it. Schöntal Abbey was founded in the 12th century and is famous as one of the most impressive pieces of Baroque architecture in northern Württemberg. This region was home to Götz von Berlichingen a medieval knight who became famous due to a book by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. His grave is in the cloister of Schöntal Abbey.

Wednesday

The scientific program on Wednesday ends at 16.15 h. Free time from 16.15 - 17.45 h. We recommend this year's special event: live coverage of Philae landing on Comet 67P/Tschurjumow-Gerasimenko The mission's lander, Philae, will be deployed on 12 November at 08:35 GMT / 09:35 CET from a distance of 22.5 km from the centre of the comet. It will land about seven hours later, with confirmation expected to arrive at Earth at around 17:00 CET. We will display the ESA livestream with the projector. Alternatively, you can go for a small hike around Schöntal Abbey (2.5 km, 45 min, 65 m altitude difference) along the monastery walls to the river Jagst. Continue along the monastery garden up to a viewing point with amazing view to Schöntal Abbey and the Jagst valley. Do not miss to take a look at the impressive monastery complex with its beautiful Baroque church and gardens.

We re-gather at 17:45 for the ''who is who'' session: each participant introduces her/him-self with 1 slide 'business card' (example linked here), saying who you are, where you are from, what you are interested in and what you are working on, without any details. We aim at a 1-minute cadence so you should speak no longer than ~45 secs. Likely, this is shorter than you think ...
We will gather all business cards in the week before the workshop, and put them all in a single presentation, so please provide your slide in PDF-format!

Thursday

The scientific program on Thursday ends at lunch. On Thursday afternoon we plan for a longer hiking tour. Depending on the weather conditions we can choose between two hikes: The first option is a round trip via Jagsthausen and Berlichingen (12 km, 3h, 170 m altitude difference) to the castle in Jagsthausen where Götz von Berlichingen lived. The second option is a shorter hike (7.5 km, 2h, 140 m altitude difference) to Rossach via the small castle ruin Storchenturm.
