Abstract:
It is common belief that planets and planetesimals form in protoplanetary discs around evolving stars. One possible scenario for the formation of these planetesimals is the coagulation of dust agglomerates. Predicted relative velocities are around 50 m/s between micrometer-sized and decimeter to meter-sized objects. To understand the collisional processes at such large velocities we developed a novel experimental setup. With the help of a high-speed centrifuge we studied continuous impacts of sub-mm dust particles. We performed several experiments concerning the evolution of dust targets from 12 to 50 m/s. We find small filling factors of 38% and see accretion efficiencies of several 10% even at the highest velocities.
