Abstract:
We present results from the Herschel Key Project HERITAGE (HERschel Inventory of The Agents of Galaxy Evolution). The survey imaged the entirety of the Lar ge and Small Magellanic Clouds and part of the Magellanic Bridge in the far-IR at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 microns. We identified approximately 35,000 and 7,500 unique far-IR point sources in the LMC and SMC, respectively. By analyzing the point-like nature of the sources and comparing to the flux distribution of galaxies identified in the ATLAS survey, we estimate approximately 10,000 and 5,000 background galaxies are in the HERITAGE LMC and SMC images. The remaining sources are dusty, compact objects in the Clouds including young stellar objects, dust clumps, evolved stars, supernova remnants, and planetary nebulae. We here present the far-IR photometric properties of these populations across the Herschel wavebands.
