Abstract:
We have used HERSCHEL PACS and SPIRE continuum maps to derive the distribution of dust temperatures and densities of the pre-stellar core B68. For this, we employed a ray-tracing algorithm together with an empirical function to fit the radial density distribution. We find radial dust temperature and density gradients with the dust temperature ranging from 8 K in the centre to a mean value of 17 K at the edge indicating external heating. The density peaks at 3.4 x 10^5 cm^-3 in the centre and blends in with the ambient material at 4.4 x 10^2 cm^-3. The slope of the mean radial density profile is n_H ~ r^-3.5, which is largely inconsistent with previous Bonnor-Ebert fits and steeper than predicted by the models of the inside-out collapse of pre-stellar cores, but is consistent with a relation to filamentary structures or pressure confined cores.
