MVSem: Protostars and Planets - Protosterne und Planeten

Master seminar in winter term 2014/2015, 2SWS

Lecturers: Henrik Beuther & Viki Joergens

Thursday 9:15AM, Physikalisches Institut, Philosophenweg 12, Raum 105
First seminar October 16th, 2014

This is a mandatory advanced seminar for master students ("Masterpflichtseminar', MVSem)
on selected topics in the field of star and planet formation.

Credit points (6CPs):
4 CPs for giving a presentation and attending the seminar,
2 CPs for a written report of the presentation.
Both will be graded.

This seminar will be held in english.

The seminar will be based on two very recent review books:
- Protostars and Planets VI, ed. by H. Beuther, K. Dullemond, Th. Henning, R. Klessen, 2014, University of Arizona Press, http://www.ppvi.org
- 50 Years of Brown Dwarfs - From Prediction to Discovery to Forefront of Research, ed. by V. Joergens, 2014, Springer
--> More details will be given in the first seminar

Potential seminar topics:
- From filamentary networks to dense cores in molecular clouds: toward a new paradigm of star formation (Link)
- The origin and universality of the initial mass function (Link)
-
Multiplicity in early stellar evolution (Link)
- Formation of brown dwarfs vs giant planets: confronting theory with observations (Link)
