The filters were chosen to provide a classification and redshift estimation quality that is as independent of object redshift and SED as feasible while keeping the number of filters below two dozen. This filter set has performed best in simulations for comparing the performance of color classification and redshift estimation in multi-color surveys (see paper by Wolf, Meisenheimer & Röser, A&A 2001, 365, 660).
