The tour at ESTEC was confirmed. Here's an excerpt from the email we received:
"Following your request, we are pleased to confirm that a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 30 participants from the Max Planck Institute are welcome to visit ESTEC and Space Expo, ESTEC's space exhibition visitors centre on Friday, 29 May 2009. The programme consists of a general introduction to ESA/ESTEC, a guided tour of the ESTEC Test facilities, and a guided tour of Space Expo (approximately +- 3 hours)."

The Students Workshop is organised by MPIA students for MPIA students. It is mainly funded by the Patzer foundation and takes place once a year at a different location. The idea of this workshop is to bring together MPIA's students so that they get to know each other. This is usually done by moving to a small house with rooms for 2-4 persons and a kitchen where we cook together.
The workshop is supported by the Patzer foundation (pages of the Patzer fund) which covers all the accomodation and travel costs. The students only have to pay for food and any recreational activities.
Every students has to give a short talk (~15 Min) about his research topic. Also every students is asked to help with the activities such as cooking, cleaning and dish washing.
The workshop is divided in a so called "official part" and an "unofficial part". The first one lasts basically 5 days and is the time where all the talks are given. In general there are around 6-8 talks per day which leaves plenty of free time (mainly in the afternoon to do some recreational activities - e.g. joint tours to some sights nearby). After the official part you can go home or join the unofficial part which is a 2 days extension at your own costs, e.g. at a town nearby.
Send an email to Markus Schmalzl and tell him that you want to participate. It's so simple! In order to confirm your participation we ask you for a deposit of 50 EUR (to be payed to Eva Meyer, office 216B) which will be used for buying the food and stuff. Later we will calculate the costs of the workshop and see if you get money back or you have to pay more. But don't forget! You will be only charged the costs of the food and the recreational activities. Travel costs and accomodation are completely covered.
Both directors fully support this students workshop as it is a very good opportunity to get to know each other and to learn how to give a scientific talk. You do not have to have any hard feelings if you tell your supervisor that you will be away for one week :)
The workshop is meant for students and young Post-Docs which were MPIA students and have just graduated (although preference will be given to students). Post Docs are asked to give special talks (e.g. about the bureaucratic and astronomical obstacles before graduation).
The students themselves organise this workshop so you are also invited to help :). Here is a list of the members of the organising committee (no preferential order). Please feel free join us!
The organisation is divided into several subgroups taking care of recreational activities, food and talks.
